Catch it at that stage and you don't need refinishing at all: a buff and recoat (also called screen and recoat) restores the protective layer and the shine in a single day, at a fraction of the cost. We lightly abrade (“screen”) the existing finish to create adhesion, no heavy sanding, no bare wood, minimal dust, then apply a fresh coat of professional finish in your preferred sheen. The floor regains its depth and luster, fine scratches disappear into the new coat, and the wood below stays protected.
In and out in one day for most homes, walkable the next morning. It's the closest thing to a reset button a hardwood floor has.
It's the right call when: the floor looks dull or lightly scratched, but the wear is only in the finish, no gray boards, no bare wood, no deep gouges or stains.
It's not enough when: wear has reached the wood itself: graying, deep scratches, water marks or stains in the wood. At that point, a full sand and refinish is the honest answer, and we'll tell you so at the estimate.

Refinishing sands the floor to bare wood, then re-stains and refinishes: a 3–5 day project. Buff and recoat only refreshes the top protective layer: one day, much lower cost, no color change. It's maintenance; refinishing is restoration.
